What is Hip Hop?
Hip-Hop is a style of dance mostly performed to hip-hop music. The styles include breaking, locking and popping which started in hip-hop crews in the USA during the 1970’s. As Hip-Hop began to appear in shows such as Soul Train and films such as Beat Street and Wild Style, hip-hop began to become more main-stream. Professional dancers began to change and develop choreography that they had seen on the street. This led to hip-hop being practised on the streets and in the studio. The commercialisation of hip-hop still continues to grow with shows and films such as Step Up and America’s Best Dance Crew. Hip-Hop still continues to develop on the streets today with styles such as turfing, krumping and jerkin emerging. Hip-Hop can be performed freestyle (improvisation), with crews battling it out in competition.
What is Commercial Dance?
Commercial dance is a strong and sassy style with elements of both street and jazz. Dancers on music videos and MTV are sometimes called commercial dancers.
